Steel Dynamics to build rolled aluminum plant in Mississippi

The American metallurgical company Steel Dynamics announced that it will build a plant for the production of rolled aluminum with a capacity of 650,000 tons per year and a cost of $1.9 billion in Columbus, Mississippi. The company announced this project in July 2022.

The new facility will be located next to the existing SDI Columbus steel plate plant. According to the company, this will reduce costs through economies of scale.

The new plant will have two aluminum scrap remelting furnaces and several rolling and finishing lines (coating, stripping, packaging, etc.). The enterprise will produce a wide range of aluminum products for construction, food, automotive and other industries.

The commissioning of the enterprise is scheduled for mid-2025. Steel Dynamics also intends to build a pilot plant for the production of 160 thousand tons of biocarbon per year. Its launch should take place in early 2024.
